Modern application of stucco was doomed because:
- energy efficiency reduced the energy available to dry walls that became wet
- loss of vapor transmission of the stucco once polymers were added
- transition to OSB from plywood and board sheathing before that
- loss of water repellency of modern building papers
None of those things are going away. So stucco is doomed. Unless. UNLESS. Unless you add a gap to control hydrostatic pressure and promote drying!
